A lone Rattata neared a small village, hunched against the wind and the pouring down rain. He tried to move forward, but the wind was getting a bit too much for him, so he decided to rest and sit down. Even though the grass where he sat down was wet, he didn’t exactly care at the moment. He had been through worse conditions before in the city, so it didn’t bother him as much. He looked around at his surroundings through the rain and saw that he was in the town that he was looking for. Tao Village… This is it, right? He asked himself, even though he was almost sure of it. In front of him was a hut in the shape of a Ninetail’s head. It was odd… Why do all the houses here seem to look like Pokémon? He wondered with a small laugh. As time went by, the Rattata grew more and more weary, tired of the continuous downpour of the rain. His fur was now drenched, water dripping off of his ears, nose, and about everywhere else. He was beginning to wonder if he should find shelter. He looked at the house that was in front of him again. The Ninetails one. He shivered as he grabbed his arms for warmth. No, I’ll just tough it out. The rain will have to stop sometime. He decided, but then something else popped into his mind. But… what if this is the house I’m looking for? The one to sign up for a… guild? That’s what it’s called, right? Some sort of rogue’s guild? Anyway, there are so few huts, so the registrar is bound to be in anyone of them, right? But which one…? Feeling his nerve, he finally got up and approached the door to the Ninetails hut. I guess I’ll try. If it’s not it, then I can at least ask for dire- His thoughts were then interrupted when he was about to knock on the door. The door flung open right before he could knock and there stood a wryly Ninetails.

“Come in, come in! My goodness, come in! I can’t believe you’ve been waiting outside in the rain all this time! You could have knocked earlier, you know!” The Ninetails urged.

The Rattata was a bit skeptical at first, wary of this stranger who has so openly let him into his own dwelling. Maybe this is just how rural mons are… His weariness got the better of him though and he walked into the warm, dry home. He liked his much better than outside, though he did realize that he was dripping water all over this Ninetails’ floor. He felt a bit bad for his undesirable condition, but that didn’t worry him in the least right now.

“My name is Callahan, or Calla, for short. I’m the guild registrar, you know. I’m quite good at it!”

The Rattata’s ears perked up upon hearing his title. The guild registrar! Yes! This is the place after all then!

“Oh, please allow me to take your belongings, they’re all wet! I’ll just hang them in front of the fireplace to dry as we go over the formalities.” Callahan stated, slipping off the green bandanna that was on the soaked Rattata’s neck.

“H-Hey!” The rat said, a bit uncomfortable. He didn’t like strangers touching his things. Especially his lucky scarf.

“And the paperwork, of course! There will be a lot of that, don’t you worry one bit!” Calla continued, ignoring him and hanging up his accessory.

Oh, right… there’s that… The Rattata thought, frowning at the idea of paperwork. Never in his life had he needed to sign or fill out paper work. Never.

“You do have the forms that we’ve mailed you filled out, yes? That does always make things go much quicker here.”

“The forms…?” He asked, a bit puzzled at first, but then remembered he had them. He went over to where the fox had hung up his bandanna and grabbed the papers that were in it. He then went back over to Callahan and handed them to him, sitting down in a nearby chair.

“What’s this? These forms are soaking wet… and the ink has run! Goodness, we’re in for a lot more paperwork than I could have hoped to dream of!” The Ninetail’s exclaimed, examining the form with wide eyes.

Were they that wet? The Rattata asked himself. His frown deepened at the thought of even more paperwork.

“No matter, I have spare forms, and all the time in the world! I trust you have no pressing appointments yet, so I’ll write down your information now.”

Good. Wonderful. He thought with annoyance. He had hoped not to be here the entire day and he especially did not want to waste his time on paperwork. Just as long as you write and I do nothing, then I’m fine.

“With your help, of course.”

With that, the Rattata stood up. “Actually, I do have an appointment.” He said, trying to get out of this mess. He just didn’t fell like doing all this crap today.

“Nonsense!” The fox said, nodding him to sit back down. “Let’s get right down to it, shall we? My fastest time for entering a team in the official guild registrar is a touch under a few hours; let’s see if we can break the record!”

I guess there’s no way out of this then… He thought, sliding back down into his chair. And is he smiling? He looks like he’s enjoying this!

“All right now... name, please?”

“Sage.” The rat replied curtly, wanting this to end as soon as possible.

“Ahh.. what.. commo- er, good name you have! How do you spell it?”

“S-A-G-E. Really, it’s not that hard.”

“Interesting spelling! Are you foreign? French, perhaps?”

“What? No!” Sage replied, confused on what he was talking about. He was pretty sure his name wasn’t French though.

“Ah, no, forget it, France is just made up here, you know. Often used as comic relief. Er, just forget that.” Calla explained, but then continued. “Moving on! What alias do you wish to give your fellow? I hope it’s something good! I’ve been so bored by Pokémon insisting to use a name like “Team Awesome” or anything of the sort. More like “Team Mediocrity,” I like to think! I’m sure you have a much more original name.”

“I was thinking Team Treasure Raiders.”

“I knew you wouldn’t let me down! Is that the normal spelling, or do you insist on losing letters, or replacing them altogether entirely?” I hope not…

“No, no. Just the normal spelling.” He answered, letting out a sigh of boredom.

“And... done. All right! Next topic!” Calla exclaimed. “Why don’t you tell me about yourself? Please make it interesting! I’m not filing a police report, you know. I don’t get paid for this, either. I do it for the stories people tell! Everyone has a story!” Some are better than others, though. That’s for sure… “However, I do hope yours isn’t filled to the brim with angst and darkness, you know. We have enough of that as it is with the recent crises we’ve been going through!” he explained and then went on, “If you insist on weaving a yarn of incredible sadness and general malaise, please make it good. I’ll discern the necessary details from your story and put it down in the log book here.”

“Well, I come from Steel City.” Sage began, looking around the room as he searched for words on where to begin. “Let’s see… No one really likes me. Merchants hate me. And… Oh yah! Some people want me dead.” He stated very bluntly as he numbered the three things on his fingers. “I’m an orphan and I basically lived on the streets all my life. I stole things to survive, sometimes getting caught, but I would eventually slip away. I also got mixed up in a lot of bad gangs, but quit all of them. Mostly because they held knives up to my throat or threatened to maul me in my sleep. Not very good comrades if you know what I mean.” The Rattata thought for a moment more, deciding if there was anything else worth telling. “That about sums me up. I left the city and came here.”

“What an enchanting tale! I can see why you’d probably like to join the Merchants!” he said with a widening grin.

“WHAT!? NO!” Sage exclaimed. “Ugh, definitely not merchants! I came here to join the rogues.”

The fox seemed to enjoy his annoyance. “Very well, then! It seems I have all I need in order to register you here in our peaceful Tao Village! Just to make sure all the facts are correct, please look over them and sign your initials at the bottom! Don’t forget to sign off on your belongings! You wouldn’t believe how many people forget their accessories, only to leave them here with me!” Please don’t do that, I have so many things cluttering up my attic in dusty old boxes…

“Seriously?” Sage asked, but was only met with the same sly smile of the Ninetails in front of him. His eyes danced with laughter at the rat’s disappointment. “Get that stupid look off of your face or I’ll-!”

“You’ll what, exactly?” Callahan asked with the same grin.

Sage grabbed the pen from him and then looked at the form. He was getting quite annoyed with this fox. His smile was the thing that unnerved him. He just wanted to punch his smug face.

“What’s that, you say? There is only one of you? Of course I know that! I do have eyes, you know!” Callahan remarked, looking at the filled out form. “What if, during your travels, you decide to recruit, or add on an extra member to your team? Would you really want them to fill out all this paperwork from scratch?"

Sage felt his heart stop at the word of paperwork, but then he let out a relieved sigh. It was just for his partner. Like I’m going to get one.

“There’s no problem with me for that, I assure you! This is just a convenient foresight! There is only room enough for four signatures on here, though, so please, no more members than that!”

“Yah, yah. Okay. Come to you if I get more members. They’ll sign papers and all that good stuff. I got it.”

“Well, now! I don’t think I’ll keep you here any longer, I have everything I need from you! I haven’t broken any records for time tonight, though. Your story took up quite a bit of it!” Thankfully, it didn’t put me to sleep... It’s happened before. “Oh well! Time to conclude our business here!”

Thank goodness! Sage thought, getting up from his seat. Callahan ushers him towards the door in which he entered. Before he could push him out though, The Rattata quickly grabbed his belongings: his bandanna. Then he headed out the door and into the rain.
