Description

The rest of the day was spent watching the other activities and cheering some others on. The sun went down gradually, dipping down to touch the horizon. Before they knew it, stars had started to appear in the purple-blue sky just as the last light of the sun disappeared. Mango and Gillegan head over to the last event of the fun-filled day.

“Ugh… I’ve been so tasteblind all day…” Mango says with a hint of dramatic sorrow as he strokes his tongue. “All I can taste is cold and snow. All I can smell is cold and snow. Nothing else. All this ice is numbing my senses.”

“So, noseblind then?” Gillegan offers as they walk on the snowy ground.

            “Same thing.”

In the near distance a fire flickers and glows, seeming to draw them in. The large fire made the snow around it glisten and sweat, creating a small circle of green and brown around it where deadened grass popped up. Some other Pokémon were gathered around, sitting on stumps and logs. Once there, Gillegan sits down on an empty log and then Mango plops down right beside him, both relishing the heat of the fire. They each simultaneously let out a sigh of relief and relaxation.

“Let the storytelling begin!” Some ‘mon says and then gestures to a team to begin.

“In a land far away from here…” An Ekans starts, his voice eerie and quiet, but Gillegan’s thoughts drown him out as he stares blankly at the fire.

All day he had tried to hint at the key or flat out ask his partner about it, but Mango either hadn’t even heard or ignored him completely. Soon enough he had just given up, but the object still bugged him. Is he hiding something? Does he… does he know something that I don’t? About our past perhaps? Maybe he was just thinking too much about it and the key meant nothing. It could be just a personal treasure to Mango for all he knew.

The Marshtomp clenches his fists and closes his eyes. No. That’s not it. I remember that key. It’s familiar. He tries to imagine it in his mind, but the image is too foggy and he had only caught glimpses of it from his partner. It feels important somehow. That key, even if a small part to my past, is definitely part of it. That I can tell.

Gillegan looks over at his partner, whose eyes are intent on the story. Gillegan catches a flicker of light and sees that Mango’s finger the same small key again. Most of it was hidden from view though and he couldn’t get a good look at it. He looked back at the fire. That key bugged him so much. Maybe he should just relax and hold back. Maybe Mango would show him one day. Who knows?

Soon enough the story was over, though Gillegan had only caught half of it. Mango nudges him.

“How about that ice cream? I could really go for a hot fudge sundae.” The Kecleon says, a drip of saliva sliding down his tongue until it made its way to the ground. His tongue swipes back into his mouth.

“Yah, let’s go.” Gillegan replies, managing a smile at his partner’s quirkiness. The two get up and leave the warmth of the fire, heading back to the Avalodge and making their way to the bar. Though there were a lot of ‘mons outside at bonfires and such, the main room of the Avalodge was rather full. There was now music and some lights and a couple party-goers dancing here and there, having a good time. Some others sat at tables, observing, eating, and talking to their fellow teammates or ‘mons from other teams.

“Hello again.” Gillegan says with a warm smile as a Clefairy takes his order and leaves. The Froslass behind the counter returns the gesture.

“Ah Gillegan, having a good time I presume?” Ayami asks and then looks over at his partner with a rather forced smile. “And your friend… he is well also? He looks warmer.”

“Haha, yah…” Gillegan replies with nervous laughter. “Don’t worry. He won’t sneeze on you again. Promise. So, to you serve any hot fudge sundaes?”

Ayami nods. “We have something like that, yes. Would you like one?”

“Yes please. Also some shaved ice. Pecha flavored.”

“I’d like to taste test one of your best Iaponese beverages as well!” Mango adds with a flick of his tail.

“Alcoholic or-“ The Froslass asks, but Mango interrupts.

            “Yes.”

“…Okay.” Ayami says a bit slowly, seeming to wonder if Mango was under-age or not, but then adds with a smile, “Your order is on its way!”

Once they get their food and drink, Mango and Gillegan sit down at a nearby Avalugg table. Mango immediately starts on his ice cream, eyeing it down and licking his lips. He has been waiting for this all day. As his partner chows down on his dessert, Gillegan starts to eat his shaved ice slowly as to not get a brain freeze. The delightful sweetness washes over his mouth and makes him content even though he shivers at its coldness.

Mango finishes his ice cream in a matter of seconds, licking the bowl clean to be sure he hadn’t missed any. Then the Kecleon clutches his head. “Brain freeze!” He shouts. Gillegan just rolls his eyes and continues to work on his ice. Soon after, Mango gulps down his Iaponese beverage.

Gillegan pushes his empty cup to the side and watches as the alcohol takes over, propping his head up with his arm. Somehow he knew this was going to happen. He preferred to stay sober. Mango sways a bit, seeming to dance to the music, and then leans over to Gillegan, draping an arm around him. “Gilly! What a day, huh? Look at all those pretty lights. Oh! Maybe they’re fairies! We should go catch some!” Mango says with a giggle. Gillegan rolls his eyes yet again.

“You were very perceptive today Gilly. Though I shouldn’t be surprised, you are the great guardian after all.” Mango drones on, though this time his words stirred something in Gillegan.

“What?” The Marshtomp asks, no longer leaning on his arm. He looks at Mango with a furrowed brow, confused.

“Silly Gilly-“ He was about to say more, but bursts out laughing. “Hahaha! Silly Gilly! That sounds funny!” After a small fit of laughter, he continues. “Forgotten already, have we? You’re always bugging me about this,” Mango gets out the key, holding it by its golden thread, “yet you don’t know? The wily thief strikes again!”

Gillegan’s eyes widen, confused more now than ever. His words hit him. They had meaning, yet he didn’t know what they meant exactly. Maybe his partner was just talking gibberish, but if that was so, why did it worry him?
