As Mango headed down the alley, he kept on flicking out his tongue to make sure he was on the right path. At one point, he stopped and licked the stone paved ground and immediately screwed up his face from the aftertaste. He was sure he could taste the scent of the Sceptile though, so he continued onward. This is going to be easier than I thought! He grins and lets out a short trill of excitement. He was here not too long ago! Soon enough I’ll- He stops as he comes to the end of the alley which opened up onto one of the main streets.

The street was filled with ‘mons, merchants, and shops. Considering the height of some of the Pokémon, some were taller and shorter than the Kecleon, leaving him to pace or to stand on his tip toes to scan the crowd in front of him. Maybe this wasn’t going to be that easy. Mango lets out a hiss. “Come on, think. I can still find him.” He says to himself as he continues to look through the crowd. “He’s tall, right? Sceptile are a bit taller. He should be somewhat easier to spot… or to-“ He stops, frozen. His pink, gooey tongue swipes out and back in again, his eyes gleaming as he picked up the scent again. It’s him!

The light orange Kecleon dashes into the crowd, pushing past a few ‘mons as he pinpoints the object of the scent. It was a tall, green, serpent ‘mon who carried berries in a small sack strapped to his back. Yes! That’s him! He cheers inside his head as his eyes fill with determination. Think you could hide in plain sight, did you? But just as he leapt onto the berry sack to tackle the ‘mon, he noticed that the creature had a tail. A very long tail along with no arms or legs. Wait… didn’t the report say that the Sceptile had no tail… And didn’t they have arms and l-

A loud, angry hissing noise erupts from the serpent as Mango landed on the berry sack and made it fall off, spilling the berries all over the ground. The Kecleon lands on the ground with the berries as he gazes up at his angry opposer. It was a Serperior. Not a Sceptile.

“What do you think you’re doing!?” The Serperior questions, extending the ‘th’ sound of ‘think’ as he flicks his tongue at the Kecleon.

“I was just uh…” Mango begins, trying to avoid the glare of the serpent’s threatening, red eyes. Why does he carry that Sceptile’s scent on him? It has to be something… Oh! The berries! Maybe he bought them from one of the shops the Sceptile went to. “… I just wanted to take a… quick inspection of your berries? Yah! The shop you bought them from told me to check up on you to make sure… which of course, that shop would be…?”

The Serperior rolls his eyes with distaste. “That berry shop right over there-“ He glances over in the direction of a small, little shop not too far away from them, “-but I don’t see why there’sssss a need to insssspect these berries. I just bought and paid for them and the sssssign says ‘fresh’, so I don’t see a reason for you to be ssssstanding before me interrupting my day.” He ends with a slight growl and flicks his massive tail with irritation.

“Right, right.” Mango replies as he slides back a bit from the face of the serpent who was looming over him and starts to get up. He tries to gather some of the berries and puts them back in the bag, but they just tumble out anyway. “It’s just that, um-“ He picks up the nearest berry – a pecha berry – and holds it up, “-this here pecha berry has… six lighter pink spots! It’s not really supposed to have any.”

All pecha berries have sssssspots.”

“Ha, ha! Right, I knew that!” Mango says with some nervous laughter. “Aren’t you funny, you… funny serpent guy. Here, I know!” Mango places the pink berry on the tip of the Serperior’s pointy nose, making it stick there. “See! You look like a clown! Get it? Because… because you’re funny! Ha ha…” Mango’s laughter fades as the Serperior continues to glare mutinously at him. The Kecleon glances to the left and right at the Pokemon passing by. They seem to be paying no mind. Wow. I guess there’ll be no witnesses of my death if this guy kills me right now. Better get out of here.

“So, uh, see you around Mr. Snake. Have a nice rest of your day!” Mango says as he backs away from the Serperior. He then turns around and flees within the crowd.

Get back here you little imp!” The Serperior hisses in outrage from behind him. “I paid for these and you ssssoiled them!” He was obviously faster and bigger than the Kecleon, but Mango managed to swerve in and out of the crowd and finally found a spot behind a barrel to hide.

“Come out little lizzzzard and pay for these!” The Serperior shouts as it slithers through the crowd. Onlookers and passersby just stare at the serpent with confusion and startlement, while some just step out of his way. Mango regains his breath as he sits behind the barrel. He peers around at the street from the side and sees the snake stop and whip its head around, its acute and alert eyes seeming to scan everything. Mango swiftly ducks his head back to the safety and shadow of the barrel. After he was certain the Serperior was far enough away now, Mango gets up and goes right up to the berry shop the Serperior had mentioned. He said that he just bought those berries here… So that Sceptile must have been here not too long ago. I could find a lead again.

“Excuse me, have you seen a Sceptile anywhere?” Mango asks, going up to a ‘mon near to the counter. “He’s been here, I’m sure, and sorta tastes – well smells! Taste and smell are very much so close to the same thing – like tea and berries and… Iapon? I’m not really sure if that makes sense, but perhaps-“ He stops, frozen again as he picks up a scent. Stronger this time. Too strong to be far away. Much too strong. Mango looks up to whom he was talking to for the first time and sees the face a Sceptile with a bruise on the right side of his face, looking at him with a grin and faint amusement in his keen, yellow eyes. “Oh… shoot.”
